Josh Acheampong made his first start for Chelsea in months during their UEFA Conference League Round of 16 second-leg victory over Copenhagen, showcasing his versatility in a new tactical role under Enzo Maresca.
The 18-year-old, previously deployed as a right-back and centre-back, was tasked with an inverted left-back role—similar to Marc Cucurella’s position in Maresca’s system.
Acheampong started at left-back but frequently moved into midfield, forming a double pivot alongside Moises Caicedo when Chelsea had possession.
Out of possession, Chelsea maintained a structured shape, but when they regained the ball, Acheampong’s movements allowed for greater fluidity. His positioning often saw him advance further up the pitch, at times even ahead of Enzo Fernandez—though this was not part of Maresca’s initial tactical blueprint.
Acheampong’s adaptability adds another dimension to Chelsea’s squad, and his performance in this unfamiliar role could provide Maresca with additional options as the Blues progress to the quarter-finals of the competition.
