Former Chelsea player and assistant manager Jody Morris has expressed doubt over whether Djordje Petrovic will be given a chance at Stamford Bridge next season, despite the goalkeeper’s outstanding loan spell at Strasbourg.

Petrovic, who played 31 games for Chelsea in the 2023/24 season, was sent on a season-long loan to Strasbourg, where he has been in exceptional form.

However, speaking to talkSPORT, Morris admitted he is not convinced Chelsea will bring him back as their No.1 next season.

“I actually can’t see it happening purely on the way things materialised.”

Morris questioned why Petrovic, who was Chelsea’s best-performing goalkeeper last season, was the one sent out on loan, while Robert Sánchez and Filip Jorgensen have struggled to make the position their own at Stamford Bridge.

“I thought Petrovic was the best goalkeeper last year, and then all of a sudden he was the one who had to go to Strasbourg.”

The Serbian shot-stopper has been breaking records in Ligue 1, recently keeping five consecutive clean sheets, a feat that hadn’t been achieved at Strasbourg in 41 years. His performances have led to suggestions that Chelsea might re-evaluate his future.

Morris acknowledged that Petrovic’s performances in France could force a rethink at Chelsea, but he remains unsure if the club’s hierarchy sees him as the long-term answer.

“Whether his form and the way he’s performed over there mean we need to re-evaluate that, I’m not sure. It wouldn’t surprise me if Petrovic came back because he’s the one in form, but is that the answer from how they’re thinking upstairs? I’m not so sure.”

Chelsea’s goalkeeper situation has been a major issue this season, with Maresca frequently rotating between Sánchez and Jorgensen. If Chelsea want to compete at the highest level, they will need a reliable No.1—and Petrovic’s exceptional loan spell may give Maresca and the club a big decision to make ahead of next season.
