PGMOL explains decision not to award Chelsea early penalty against Leicester City

Chelsea

Chelsea were denied a penalty just two minutes into their 1-0 win over Leicester City after Cole Palmer went down under a challenge from Conor Thomas.

Despite strong appeals from the Blues, both the on-field referee and VAR ruled against awarding a spot-kick.

According to the Premier League Match Centre, the decision was reviewed, and VAR confirmed that “the referee’s call of no penalty to Chelsea following a challenge by Thomas on Palmer was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the contact deemed to be minimal.”

While there was contact, officials determined it was not enough to justify a penalty, leaving Chelsea frustrated. However, the Blues eventually secured the win through Marc Cucurella’s second-half goal.
