Chelsea fans have voiced their frustration over Aston Villa’s decision to use Axel Disasi as a right-back, arguing that the Frenchman is far more comfortable playing in central defence.
Disasi, who left Chelsea in January in search of regular game time, is a versatile defender capable of playing both positions. However, history suggests that he struggles at right-back, a concern that has been echoed by Blues supporters.
“Why do all these managers like to play Disasi at right-back?” one Chelsea fan questioned, highlighting the recurring tactical decision that has puzzled many.
Another supporter suggested a different approach for Villa, saying, “They should put Ezri Konsa at right-back and Axel Disasi at centre-back.”
Expressing further dissatisfaction, a fan wrote: “Why would you have Disasi playing right-back?”
One Chelsea fan went into detail about the defender’s shortcomings in the full-back role: “Disasi playing right-back is always a disaster. The Brugge equaliser was on him being flat-footed and not being aggressive enough to win the ball. He is better centrally.”
Despite his positive influence in Chelsea’s dressing room, Disasi’s move to Villa made sense as he sought more playing opportunities. While his performances as a centre-back have impressed Villa fans, it remains to be seen whether their desire to sign him permanently will waver if he continues to be played out of position.
During his time at Chelsea, Disasi looked much more comfortable as a central defender, where his physicality and aggression were better utilised. If Villa persist in using him at right-back, it could affect his form and, potentially, their willingness to make his move permanent.
