Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca may not need to spend a penny to fix one of his side’s biggest weaknesses next season, as Djordje Petrovic continues to impress on loan at Strasbourg.
The Blues have struggled with consistency between the posts, with Robert Sanchez making five errors leading to goals—the highest in the Premier League alongside Ipswich’s Arijanet Muric. This led to Filip Jorgensen replacing him as Chelsea’s No.1 in recent weeks.
However, Chelsea could have a ready-made solution in Petrovic, who has been in outstanding form at Strasbourg, keeping five consecutive clean sheets. His performances in France suggest he could return to Stamford Bridge as a strong contender for the No.1 spot.
The 25-year-old Serbian goalkeeper was loaned out due to concerns over his distribution, a key requirement in Maresca’s build-from-the-back system. However, he has significantly improved in this area, with his passing accuracy rising from 76.4% at Chelsea to 79.4% at Strasbourg. He is also seeing more of the ball, averaging 47.1 passes per game compared to 30.7 with Chelsea last season.
With Petrovic’s development progressing well, Chelsea might avoid dipping into the transfer market and instead hand him a chance to stake his claim for the No.1 role next season.
