Chelsea legend John Terry has made it clear that qualifying for the Champions League should always be the club’s minimum target, as the Blues fight for a top-four finish in the Premier League this season.
When asked about Chelsea’s chances of securing a Champions League spot, Terry remained hopeful but acknowledged the team’s inconsistency.
“Champions League, still a possibility? Who knows?” Terry said.
The former captain highlighted Chelsea’s struggles with maintaining form, pointing out the challenges of a young squad.
He said: “We’ve showed signs this year of being a really young squad, I think. And I say that in terms of performances where you see a really good spell, then we’ve come off of it lately.”
Terry admitted he expected some dips in form this season, even when the team started well.
He added: “It was always going to be one of those seasons for me, even when we started well. I thought we’d have a little bit of a drop-off and we have done that.”
However, the Chelsea icon firmly stated that playing in Europe’s elite competition must be the club’s standard.
He concluded by saying: “Listen, Champions League has to be the minimum every year for me. When you’re playing at a top club like Chelsea, the mentality has to be Champions League football year after year.”
Chelsea currently sit fifth in the Premier League table, a position that could secure them Champions League qualification depending on UEFA’s allocation for next season. However, their recent slump—losing three of their last five league games—has put Chelsea’s top-four hopes in jeopardy.
For the Blues to meet Terry’s expectations, they must rediscover their consistency in the final stretch of the season.
