Chelsea legend Joe Cole has slammed the club’s recruitment strategy, claiming their handling of goalkeepers is a prime example of deeper issues within the system.
Speaking on the Dressing Room Podcast, the former Blues attacker questioned how a club of Chelsea’s stature could have so many goalkeepers yet still lack a clear No.1.
“It’s something systemically wrong because you can’t have nine goalkeepers on your books and not know which one is your number one,” Cole said.
The situation at Stamford Bridge remains uncertain, with Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen both struggling to cement themselves as the club’s undisputed first-choice keeper. Chelsea also sent Kepa Arrizabalaga and Djordje Petrovic out on loan while investing in young goalkeepers for the future.
“You’ve got Kepa out on loan, Petrovic out on loan, you’ve bought some young, promising ones,” Cole added, highlighting the inconsistency in Chelsea’s planning.
“If your system works well, you shouldn’t make as many mistakes that have been made with goalkeepers.”
Despite their heavy investment in the position, Chelsea continue to suffer from instability between the posts—an issue that raises serious concerns about the club’s overall recruitment strategy.
