‘Even after the 1-1…’ – Enzo Maresca laments missed chances in Chelsea’s defeat to Aston Villa

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca believes his side’s lack of clinical finishing cost them in their 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday night.

The Blues took an early lead through Enzo Fernandez, but a second-half brace from Marco Asensio turned the game in Villa’s favour. Despite creating several opportunities, Chelsea failed to capitalise, leaving Maresca frustrated.

“Even after the 1-1 we had chances to score,” Maresca said post-match. “We had some great chances and in this league you have to be clinical otherwise until the end anything can happen.”

Reflecting on the game’s momentum swings, he added, “I think it is the dynamic of the game. There are moments you are more in control and you create chances, and then there are moments they do the same. You have to manage both. This is why we have said many times that the difference is inside both boxes.”

Chelsea’s inconsistency in front of goal remains a concern as the Blues continue to chase European qualification. With key fixtures ahead, Maresca will be hoping his side can sharpen their finishing and turn performances into results.
