Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has dismissed concerns over Cole Palmer’s recent performances, insisting the young playmaker remains a crucial part of his plans despite the team’s struggles.

Palmer has been one of Chelsea’s standout performers this season, but his influence has waned in recent weeks as the Blues have struggled for consistency. However, ahead of their upcoming clash with Southampton, Maresca made it clear he has no concerns over the 21-year-old.

“No. I’m always concerned about general performance but I’m not concerned about Cole. Cole is a human being,” Maresca stated.

The Italian coach believes Palmer’s dip in form is more reflective of the team’s overall struggles rather than an individual issue. He also warned against placing too much reliance on the former Manchester City man to be Chelsea’s sole source of inspiration.

“The problem with Cole is probably we rely on Cole for everything and I’ve said since the start, we need to rely on the team. We are not worried about Cole at all,” he added.

Palmer missed a key chance in Chelsea’s recent 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa, a game in which the Blues lacked cutting edge in attack. However, Maresca defended the youngster, acknowledging the high expectations placed on him.

“The other day (in defeat to Aston Villa), I think yes he had a great chance but overall the performance from Cole, every game we expect goals and assists from him, so it’s difficult; he is a human being. His performances at the minute probably reflect the team’s performances,” Maresca concluded.

With Chelsea aiming to bounce back against Southampton, Palmer will be hoping to rediscover his best form and help lift the team out of their current slump.
