Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has reaffirmed his trust in Filip Jorgensen, insisting the goalkeeper will remain the club’s first choice despite his costly mistake in the recent defeat to Aston Villa.
Jorgensen was at fault in Chelsea’s 2-1 loss at Villa Park, leading to speculation over whether he could be dropped ahead of the Blues’ FA Cup clash against Southampton. However, Maresca has shut down those claims, making it clear that the Danish shot-stopper will keep his place.
“He’s okay. He feels a little bit sad or upset because he recognised there has been a mistake,” Maresca said.
“For sure, if we need to change players every time they make a mistake, we need to change many players game by game. Nothing changes [in goal for selection].”
Jorgensen has featured 16 times for Chelsea across all competitions this season, recording five clean sheets while conceding 18 goals. Despite some inconsistencies, the 22-year-old remains a key figure in Maresca’s plans as the team looks to bounce back from recent setbacks.
Chelsea will be aiming to return to winning ways against Southampton, and Jorgensen will have the chance to redeem himself as he retains the manager’s backing.
