Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has admitted that his team is still trying to understand why they continue to drop points from winning positions, as they prepare for their Premier League clash against Southampton.
The Blues have already lost 13 points from winning positions this season, a concerning trend that raises questions about their game management and mentality.
Speaking to the media ahead of the Southampton match, Maresca confessed that the issue is being analysed within the club.
“I don’t know, to be honest. I don’t have an answer for that. I knew this, that we dropped 13 points from winning positions,” the Chelsea boss said.
Maresca, however, sees a positive in the fact that his team has been able to take the lead in games but stressed that they must learn how to protect their advantage.
“Sometimes it is football, sometimes there is a reason why behind, we are trying to understand a little bit. The good thing is at least you were in front in these kinds of games,” he explained.
“Now, it is the other part; when you are in front, try and protect that.”
One major issue, according to Maresca, has been Chelsea’s inability to kill off games when they have the chance to extend their lead.
“In almost all of these games, we analyse that we had chances from 1-0 to go 2-0, from 0-1 to go 0-2, we miss more than once. Even against Villa, we had four or five chances to go 2-0 in the first half.”
The Italian admitted that these missed opportunities have cost his side valuable points.
“At the end, you miss and the game is always open and anything can happen. For sure, it is something we need to understand.”
With Chelsea looking to return to winning ways against Southampton, Maresca will be hoping his side can finally address their weakness and secure three points without throwing away another lead.
