Chelsea urged to sell Christopher Nkunku and sign Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta instead

Former Chelsea striker Loic Remy has suggested that the Blues should part ways with Christopher Nkunku in the summer and consider signing Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta instead.

Nkunku arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2023 for £52 million following a sensational spell at RB Leipzig, but his time in west London has been plagued by injuries and inconsistency. Despite showing glimpses of his talent, the Frenchman has struggled to cement his place as a regular starter under Enzo Maresca, who has often preferred Nicolas Jackson in attack.

While Nkunku has contributed 13 goals and four assists across all competitions this season, his performances in Chelsea’s FA Cup and Premier League defeats to Brighton have raised doubts over his long-term future. Remy believes it would be in the best interest of both the player and the club for him to move on.

“Christopher Nkunku’s move to Chelsea hasn’t gone to plan, he had a serious injury and hasn’t been a regular starter. There was also massive expectation there,” Remy told Plejmo.com.

“There was huge expectation thanks to his form in Germany and he’s been unlucky, it looked like he could’ve left in the transfer window and then he didn’t look himself in the FA Cup exit.”

The former Chelsea forward believes that a fresh start would be the best solution for Nkunku, whether that be on loan or a permanent transfer.

“I think it would be best for him to get a fresh start in the summer, whether that is a loan or a permanent move. Sometimes things don’t work out and it’s wrong to try and force it. I think he can bounce back elsewhere.”

In place of Nkunku, Remy has urged Chelsea to pursue Crystal Palace’s in-form striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, who has been one of the Premier League’s most prolific scorers over the past year. The Frenchman has netted 23 times in the league since 2023, ranking him behind only Erling Haaland, Alexander Isak, Cole Palmer, and Mohamed Salah.

Remy believes Mateta has the qualities needed to succeed at Stamford Bridge.

“Jean-Philippe Mateta has the profile to thrive at Chelsea. I saw him playing in the Olympics for the French national side and he impressed me a lot,” he said.

“He isn’t the type of player to really impress you technically but he is always there and loves scoring goals. He is so annoying to play against as a defender.”

Chelsea are likely to be in the market for a new striker this summer, and Mateta’s performances have caught the attention of several clubs. Palace have reportedly placed a £50 million price tag on the 27-year-old, with interest growing from both England and Europe.

“He has the right profile and is on fire at the moment, I think many clubs are looking for a striker and I think we could see a big transfer for him in the summer,” Remy added.
