Brighton’s opening goal against Chelsea was a moment of individual brilliance from Kaoru Mitoma, but it was Trevoh Chalobah who found himself at the center of criticism from Chelsea supporters.

The goal, which started with a long ball from Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, saw Mitoma produce an exquisite first touch before curling a shot past Filip Jorgensen. While some may argue the Danish goalkeeper could have done better, the majority of Chelsea fans on social media pointed fingers at Chalobah for his role in the goal.

Many believed the centre-back made it far too easy for Mitoma to execute his skill, questioning his defensive approach in the situation.

One fan, TheLeperLeprechaun, sarcastically commented:
“Mitoma has just sent Chalobah for a McFlurry there.”

Another user, Saucy_Man11, expressed frustration over the perception of Chalobah’s ability:
“Wow. The people’s centre-back doing very poorly there. Remind me why everyone gushes over Chalobah again.”

The backlash continued with prince_g00se, who criticized the hype around the defender:
“Embarrassing how many of you thought Chalobah was the saviour of this defence.”

A more detailed critique came from Vince, who emphasized Chalobah’s lack of physicality in the duel:
“Chalobah just let him do that. No body contact. Bump him out of the way or just make it uncomfortable for him to control the ball. That’s poor defending.”

Futbol Chelsea echoed the frustration:
“Chalobah man….. How do you let Mitoma bring that down?? I am tired of this garbage.”

Even a supporter of Chalobah, WCseduction, admitted concerns about his form:
“Man as much as I love Chalobah I never understood the outrage over him not starting. He has not been great since coming back bar the first game.”

Despite Chalobah being highly rated by sections of the Chelsea fanbase, this latest performance has added fuel to the ongoing debate about his role in Enzo Maresca’s squad.
