Enzo Maresca has revealed that Chelsea’s goal this season was never strictly about securing a top-four finish, but rather a long-term plan to return to the Champions League within two years.
When asked if Nottingham Forest’s strong form could threaten Chelsea’s top-four hopes, the Italian coach dismissed the notion that finishing in the top four was his main objective.
“I didn’t say our target was top four. The club never told me the target was top four,” Maresca stated.
He further clarified the expectations set when he took charge at Stamford Bridge, emphasising that Chelsea are already exceeding his personal projections.
“When I signed here, the target was in two years playing in the Champions League, not in one year. This is why I have said many times we are above my expectation.”
Maresca also took a moment to acknowledge Nottingham Forest’s impressive performances this season.
“Nottingham Forest are doing fantastic, very good, so congratulations to them. We will see how we finish.”
When pressed on whether finishing outside the top four would make Chelsea’s season a failure, he remained non-committal.
“We will see how we finish.”
With Chelsea currently battling for a top-four spot, Maresca’s comments suggest that while Champions League qualification would be a significant achievement, the club’s long-term vision remains the priority.
