AC Milan director Zlatan Ibrahimovic has revealed that the club acted swiftly to secure Joao Felix on loan from Chelsea, with no hesitation once the Portuguese forward became available.
Felix, who made an immediate impact by scoring a stunning debut goal in the Coppa Italia quarterfinal win against Roma, was officially presented to the media on Monday. Ibrahimovic praised the 24-year-old’s talent and potential during the event. “He’s already introduced himself with a magical goal, but we’re here to welcome Joao Felix today,” Ibrahimovic said.
The Swedish legend highlighted Felix’s blend of experience and youth, suggesting he can be a key figure for Milan. “He was the last signing of the transfer window, he is a great talent, he has a lot of experience but he is still young and can still grow. We looked for a player to link the midfield and attack for ‘blocked’ matches against closed-off teams. He can make the difference.”
Ibrahimovic explained that AC Milan’s transfer strategy this window was about providing depth and flexibility for the coaching staff. “When we went into this window, we tried to provide the coach with two teams,” he said. “We play a lot, we need alternatives. The coach has a lot of options now. If they defend, they can all play together. We need balance, in attack and defence.”
He emphasised that no player, including Felix, is guaranteed a starting spot, but hopes the Portuguese forward can carve out a legendary status at the San Siro. “The important thing is to have given the coach two teams and lots of alternative options. It’s up to him to decide who to play, nobody has a guaranteed place on the pitch. We hope that Joao can also become a legend in Milan.”
Reflecting on how quickly the deal came together, Ibrahimovic revealed: “When his name came out, we talked about it. Then after five minutes, we decided we were done. Conceicao wanted him a lot. He knows him well, he’s a friend of his son’s.” He added, “After we decided to take a punt on him, things went well, the negotiation went quickly.”
Felix’s strong start at Milan, coupled with recent comments from Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca downplaying the club’s need for him, has led many fans to believe his time at Stamford Bridge may be over. But with the backing of AC Milan and the chance to follow in the footsteps of Rossoneri legends, Felix’s career could be set for an exciting new chapter in Italy.
