Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has clarified the absence of striker Nicolas Jackson following the Blues’ 2-1 defeat to Brighton in the FA Cup fourth round, a result that ends their cup run this season.
Addressing the media after the match, Maresca reassured fans about Jackson’s condition. “It was planned. He is okay, he is training but it was to protect him,” he explained.
The manager also highlighted the striker’s influence on the pitch, suggesting his absence was felt during the game. He said: “Sometimes I think you need to play some games without players to realise how important they are. Off the ball, his pressing is always very good and on the ball he is a threat always.”
Reflecting on the team’s overall performance, Maresca remained positive despite the defeat. “We started very good, controlled and created some chances. The second half more or less happened the same,” he noted. However, Chelsea struggled to convert their dominance into a win, allowing Brighton to come from behind and secure victory.
