Chelsea’s ruthless squad management has been a consistent theme throughout the club’s history, and Florent Malouda’s experience in 2013 remains one of the most controversial examples of this approach.

Despite being a Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup winner, Malouda was banished from the first-team squad and barred from training under then-manager Rafa Benitez. The former French international, who scored 45 goals during his six-year spell at Stamford Bridge, later revealed the club’s harsh treatment, claiming they attempted to mentally break him.

Speaking to The Mail Online (via France-Guyane), Malouda said:

“The details I’ll explain when I’m free. But the strategy they use is to make me look like a player seeking substantial compensation. If you are excluded for one year, it is very, very long.

“You must be armed mentally. All this is done to break me mentally, but in reality, it motivates me enormously.”

Malouda’s exile mirrors the club’s ruthless handling of players under various ownerships, with recent examples including Ben Chilwell’s omission from the Premier League squad. While Chelsea’s ambition remains high, their approach to unwanted players continues to spark debate.
