Problems at both ends: Any way out for Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea?

Enzo Maresca may have anticipated Chelsea’s current struggles, but the reality of their downturn in form is now undeniable.

After briefly sitting second in the Premier League in mid-December, just two points behind Liverpool, the Blues have since won just one league match, exposing issues in both attack and defence.

Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has come under scrutiny, leading the league with five errors resulting in goals. Meanwhile, forward Nicolas Jackson has failed to find the net since mid-December, leaving Chelsea lacking a reliable goal-scoring threat.

The drop-off in form has coincided with the end of their Conference League midweek fixtures, where Chelsea routinely rotated their squad against weaker opposition. Maresca frequently made wholesale changes in those matches, keeping squad players involved and in form. Now, many of those players find themselves either stuck on the bench or linked with moves away.

Adding to the instability is the ongoing transfer window noise, which Maresca himself admitted has been an “absolute nightmare.” While his remark carried a hint of humour, it reflects the distractions and uncertainty surrounding the club this month.

As Chelsea look to regain their footing, Maresca faces the challenge of restoring balance and consistency—both in defence and attack—to salvage their season.
