Renato Veiga’s future at Chelsea appears uncertain as the young defender has now joined Juventus on loan until the end of the season.
The 21-year-old, who joined the Blues for £12 million from Basel last summer, has impressed during his debut season, racking up over 1,000 minutes in 18 appearances and earning call-ups to the Portugal national team.
Despite his development, Veiga was eager to leave Stamford Bridge this month to secure more regular first-team football and bolster his chances of staying in the Portugal squad. His decision to push for a move has surprised many, including Chelsea fans, who view him as a rising star.
Transfer expert Graeme Bailey shared his thoughts on Veiga’s future, telling The Chelsea Chronicle:
“In terms of Veiga – I know Chelsea fans are saying it’s a shock. I must admit, if he plays any football in Turin, I’d be surprised if he comes back to Chelsea.”
Veiga faces tough competition at Chelsea, with Marc Cucurella established as the first-choice left-back and Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana forming Enzo Maresca’s preferred centre-back pairing. While the club and manager rate Veiga highly, his push to leave raises doubts about his long-term future in West London.
Bailey continued: “Let’s not beat around the bush, the player wanted to leave. The one hope Chelsea have got is that he becomes homesick for West London. Is that going to happen? I very much doubt it.”
Despite these uncertainties, Chelsea reportedly remains optimistic about Veiga’s potential and believes his value will rise during his stint in Turin. However, Bailey concluded:
“They’re confident he’ll do well, and his value is only going to go up. But I don’t personally see a long-term future for Veiga at Chelsea.”
As Veiga prepares for his move to Juventus, questions remain about whether he will return to Stamford Bridge or carve out a new path elsewhere.
