‘Anyone who calls football soccer, I don’t wanna talk to you’: John Obi Mikel goes hard on Chelsea’s American owners

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has taken a swipe at the club’s current American ownership, questioning their understanding of the sport.

“I don’t know too much about these American owners, they call it football or soccer? Anyone who calls football soccer, I don’t wanna talk to you, you clearly have no knowledge on the game,” Mikel said during an episode of The Obi One Podcast.

Mikel went on to contrast the current ownership with former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, whom he credited for the club’s golden era.

“Roman was the guy, spending so much money, bringing the best, always making sure we’re at the top,” Mikel remarked. “Every year we are winning trophies and competing. Even if we didn’t win, the next year we had to win 1-2 trophies. For us, Roman was the guy.”

Mikel’s comments underline a growing sentiment among some Chelsea fans and former players who feel the club’s direction under its American owners lacks the ambition and footballing knowledge of the Abramovich era.
