Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has criticised Nicolas Jackson for failing to capitalise on a key opportunity during Chelsea’s recent 3-1 loss to Manchester City. Jackson missed a chance to double Chelsea’s lead after they went 1-0 up early in the game.
Speaking about the incident, Mikel was unapologetic in his assessment of the striker’s decision-making:
“Again, we went 1-0 up and we had that chance to go 2-0 up with Nicolas Jackson. Some people are saying that the pass from Cole Palmer is a little bit… no, it’s not. You’re a striker, just put your foot through it.”
Mikel stressed the importance of taking decisive action in such moments: “If you miss it, it’s fine. But attempt to score. What did he do? Just controlled the ball and then came back. Your job is to f*ing score the goals.”
Despite the criticism, Jackson has been a key contributor for Chelsea this season, registering 9 goals and 5 assists in 23 matches. However, the missed opportunity against City has drawn attention to his need for greater composure in front of goal as Chelsea aim to refine their attack.
