Maresca’s comments on Sanchez parallel to Lampard’s 2020 remarks on Kepa

Enzo Maresca’s response to questions about Robert Sanchez following his poor performance against Manchester City has drawn comparisons to Frank Lampard’s comments about Kepa Arrizabalaga in 2020.

When asked whether he would drop Sanchez after his costly display, Maresca said: “We trust Robert for sure but, in the same moment, he is aware that he is making mistakes. We continue to trust Robert but we have an entire week [training]. We see the reaction and decide for the next games.”

Chelsea fans were quick to recall a similar situation five years ago when Lampard benched Kepa after a string of underwhelming performances. At the time, Lampard said:

“I don’t really pay attention to outside criticism. Kepa realises he made mistakes that cost goals. That’s the nature of it and he needs to improve. If you are out of form, you have to fight to get it back.”

The parallels between the two situations raise questions about whether Sanchez will face the same fate as Kepa, who struggled to regain his form and eventually lost his starting spot at Chelsea.

Will Maresca stick with Sanchez or make a change? Fans will have to wait and see how the situation unfolds.

  1. If the coach don’t bench the keeper he will be in trouble
