When Chelsea signed Frank Lampard from West Ham in 2001, few could have predicted the legendary impact he would have at Stamford Bridge.

Over the years, Lampard won nearly every major trophy with the club and became Chelsea’s all-time top scorer—an achievement that still defines his legacy.

Arguably, Lampard’s finest moment came in May 2012, when he captained Chelsea to their first Champions League final triumph against Bayern Munich.

In a dramatic final, Didier Drogba’s equaliser and decisive penalty kick sparked wild celebrations, marking the culmination of years of near-misses in Europe.

After the victory, Lampard dedicated the historic win to Chelsea’s then-owner Roman Abramovich, highlighting the Russian billionaire’s pivotal role in shaping the club’s success. Speaking to TalkSPORT, Lampard said:

“Roman Abramovich deserves this. We wouldn’t be where we are without him pumping in the money and producing the squad that he’s done.”

The England international acknowledged that Abramovich’s financial backing and desire for success were transformative for the club. Reflecting on Abramovich’s impact during his departure as a player, Lampard told The FA:

“Roman Abramovich, the man who saved our Club and took us all to new levels. His desire to push the Club to the top of the football world has rubbed off on everyone.”

Although Abramovich later made the difficult decision to sack Lampard as Chelsea’s manager in 2021, his appreciation for the club legend never waned. Lampard’s dismissal paved the way for Thomas Tuchel’s appointment, which led to another Champions League victory. However, reports at the time suggested Abramovich was initially hesitant about hiring Tuchel.

Despite the managerial change, Lampard’s gratitude towards Abramovich remains unwavering. As a player, captain, and manager, Lampard’s career at Chelsea is deeply intertwined with the vision and ambition of the club’s former owner.
