Chelsea are gearing up for a hectic final week in the January transfer window, as Fabrizio Romano reports that the Blues are working hard on present and future targets.
Despite their lack of activity so far, the club remains determined to bolster their squad amid their recent struggles in the Premier League.
The Blues’ form has been underwhelming, with just one win in their last seven games, causing Chelsea to slip out of the top four after being considered title contenders alongside Liverpool and Arsenal earlier in the season. The January window has seen only the return of Trevoh Chalobah from his loan spell at Crystal Palace, leaving fans clamouring for reinforcements.
Defeat to Manchester City highlighted glaring weaknesses in Chelsea’s attack, particularly when Cole Palmer is not at his best. This has led to links with a number of attacking options, including Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Tel is a player Chelsea admire, and there were discussions earlier in the window about a potential swap deal involving Christopher Nkunku. Speaking on the situation, Romano said:
“Chelsea keep working for present and future on the market. It’s going to be a busy week for Chelsea for sure. The final one of January, but then it’s also important to remind what they are waiting for.
“For example, a player they like is Mathys Tel at Bayern, a player they wanted at the beginning of the window, when they discussed a potential swap deal in two separate negotiations, but still the same clubs talking. Bayern and Chelsea, about Christopher Nkunku and Mathys Tel.
“At the beginning of the window Mathys Tel had no intention to leave Bayern, he wanted to continue, and this remains the idea of the player but in the last three games he played zero minutes, and this could mean the situation could change in the final days of the window.”
The 18-year-old forward, valued at £40m, was initially keen to stay at Bayern Munich, but his lack of game time in recent matches could potentially open the door for a move. Chelsea’s ongoing struggles in attack make Tel a key target as they look to salvage their season.
With time running out, Chelsea supporters will hope the club’s final push in the market brings in the quality needed to reignite their campaign.
