Reece James reflected on Chelsea’s progress under manager Enzo Maresca, following a 3-1 defeat to Manchester City. The Blues’ captain emphasised the challenges of competing with a well-established team like City but remained optimistic about the future.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, James admitted the result was frustrating. “It’s frustrating not to come away with more,” he said. “I’d like to think we’re making progress. We’re giving it our all and hopefully the results will [start to] show that.”
James highlighted the gulf in team cohesion between Chelsea and Manchester City, whose core has been together for years. “When the ball isn’t dropping for you, it’s tough,” he said. “We’ve been together less than one year and they’ve been together for seven years.”
Despite Chelsea’s recent dip in form, with only one win in their last seven matches and a slide to sixth in the Premier League table, James urged fans to remain patient and realistic. “A lot of people talk about top four but we’ll take it one game at a time.”
