Gary Neville has called on Chelsea to consider signing a new goalkeeper after Robert Sanchez’s costly mistakes in their 3-1 defeat to Manchester City.
Speaking on Sanchez’s role in City’s second goal, Neville did not hold back in his criticism.
“What is he doing?” Neville questioned, referring to Sanchez’s poor decision-making that led to Man City’s crucial goal. “I mean, he’s making a lot of errors, and I remember a few years ago that I was quite tough on Karius at Liverpool when he was coming through and making errors.”
Neville went on to draw comparisons between Chelsea’s current situation and Liverpool’s struggles before they signed Alisson Becker. “Liverpool were a team that were growing to a point where they could win the title, but they wouldn’t have won a title with Karius in net because he was making too many errors.”
Highlighting the importance of the position, Neville stressed that Chelsea need to address their goalkeeper situation if they are to compete for major trophies. “It’s a too important position, and I think Chelsea at this point in time are going to have to look at their goalkeeper. It’s obvious because he’s making far too many errors, week in week out. He gets away with it in some weeks, but today he hasn’t got away with it. It was a mini turning point in the game.”
With Sanchez under increasing scrutiny, Neville’s comments add to the mounting pressure on Chelsea to find a more reliable option between the sticks. Whether Enzo Maresca agrees remains to be seen, but it’s clear that Sanchez’s performances are raising serious concerns.
