Chelsea fans turned their frustration towards Noni Madueke after his costly mistake played a significant role in Manchester City’s equaliser during the 3-1 defeat.
City’s first goal, scored by Josko Gvardiol in the 42nd minute, was enabled by Madueke keeping all City players onside as the ball flew over Chelsea’s high defensive line. The winger’s lack of tactical awareness and failure to track back in time drew harsh criticism from supporters.
One fan, WorriedInterest4114, commented, “Madueke playing Nunes onside and yet so far away from the follow-up.” Another supporter, ruhdolph, added, “Madueke playing them onside is ridiculous. I’ve tried to be patient with him but that’s hard to forgive.”
Others pointed to Madueke’s failure to utilise his pace to recover. Felix wrote, “Madueke is faster than Gvardiol. If he was alert and followed him, he would have got there first. We’ve been asking to concede ever since scoring. Piss poor.”
Criticism extended to his overall defensive contribution, with mohankohan stating, “Second game in a row Madueke has been f**king tragic at tracking back,” and Calm_Fail_5824 adding, “I’m sorry but that’s so lazy from Madueke and something Neto would never do.”
Some fans dismissed Madueke’s earlier goal, like Will, who said, “Classic Noni performance this. Goal changes nothing.”
While Robert Sanchez and Enzo Maresca’s high defensive line also came under scrutiny, Madueke’s lapse in concentration and defensive effort has made him the focal point of fans’ frustrations.
