Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has come under fire from fans after defending goalkeeper Robert Sanchez despite mounting criticism over his costly mistakes.
Speaking at his latest press conference, Maresca firmly backed his No.1 goalkeeper, urging perspective in evaluating Sanchez’s performances.
“I fully trust Robert Sanchez,” Maresca said.
“How many times has [Moises] Caicedo missed a pass? Many times. How many times has Nico [Jackson] missed a goal? Many times. How many times has Noni [Madueke] missed a cross? Many times. Robert has made four mistakes.”
However, Maresca’s comments failed to appease frustrated Chelsea fans, who vented their anger on X.
One fan wrote: “We will soon be saying, ‘how many times will Chelsea sack a coach’.”
Another criticised Maresca’s assessment of Sanchez: “Love Enzo but it’s simply crazy how he’s only counted four mistakes. Bloke puts the whole stadium in panic whenever he is on the ball.”
A third fan issued a stark warning: “Four mistakes per match, he will cost you your job… Watch.”
Despite the backlash, Maresca appears unwavering in his decision to stand by Sanchez as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper. Whether this loyalty will pay off or backfire remains to be seen, but for now, Maresca’s trust in his No.1 is resolute.
