Former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has been living in exile since selling the club in 2022, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and subsequent sanctions.

Abramovich, who acquired Chelsea in 2003 for £140 million, revolutionised the club through heavy investments, including a £100 million transfer spree in 2004 that brought legends like Didier Drogba and Petr Cech to Stamford Bridge. Under his ownership, Chelsea secured numerous trophies, including two Champions League titles in 2012 and 2021.

The billionaire was forced to sell Chelsea for a record £4.25 billion amid allegations of ties to Vladimir Putin, which he denies. Since then, Abramovich has divided his time between Sochi, Istanbul, and Tel Aviv, reportedly distancing himself from football. He has been spotted enjoying Turkish cuisine in Istanbul, and his superyacht, Eclipse, remains docked in Marmaris.

Despite rumours of him purchasing a Turkish football club, sources claim Abramovich maintains a low profile, with locals refraining from discussing his activities.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s new ownership is cooperating with the Premier League on investigations into alleged financial irregularities during Abramovich’s tenure, particularly concerning the transfers of Willian and Samuel Eto’o in 2013.

Proceeds from the sale of Chelsea were intended for charitable purposes, according to Abramovich’s representatives, but remain frozen under EU sanctions.
