‘I feel desperately sorry for  Trev’ – Ex-Chelsea defender predicts whether Trevoh Chalobah will shine under Maresca after loan recall

Trevoh Chalobah

Trevoh Chalobah’s unexpected return to Chelsea from Crystal Palace has sparked speculation about his immediate role in the team. The 25-year-old defender, recalled mid-season to bolster the Blues’ defensive options, could play a key role for head coach Enzo Maresca, especially with Wesley Fofana sidelined by a long-term injury.

Jason Cundy, a former Chelsea player, has expressed optimism about Chalobah’s chances of breaking into the starting XI.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Cundy stated: “The system that Maresca plays, in possession, we are three at the back because of that inverted full-back. I think Trevoh on that right-hand side can play that role, which is kind of amazing when you think about the players he’s had in there…”

Cundy believes Chalobah’s recent experience at Palace, where he excelled on the right side of a back three, makes him a perfect fit for Chelsea’s current tactical approach. He added:

“I feel desperately sorry for Trev, but what a chance to come back. I think he does start. I think he starts because of the system he plays. Trevoh has played a three at Palace; he played a three at Chelsea. I think we’ll see him on that right, stepping into playing that wide receiver. Good luck to the boy. I hope he does himself proud.”

Chalobah’s loan spell at Crystal Palace was cut short after he impressed with consistent performances. Upon his return to Stamford Bridge, Maresca reportedly assured the defender of regular first-team opportunities, a move that could help solidify Chelsea’s backline during a crucial part of the season.

With Chelsea still in contention for cup competitions and chasing consistency in the league, Chalobah will hope to earn significant minutes and prove his worth. However, the defender may be disappointed if he doesn’t receive the kind of game time he enjoyed at Selhurst Park.
