Chelsea Football Club is encountering significant local opposition to its proposed expansion of the training ground in Stoke D’Abernon, Surrey.

Residents in the area have voiced concerns about the potential impact on traffic, rising housing prices, and disruptions to the community’s way of life.

The club initially submitted plans to Elmbridge Borough Council in late 2022, which included the construction of six boutique homes, ranging from one to four-bedroom units. These plans also involved demolishing existing stables and converting Victorian-era barns into residential properties. However, the council rejected the application due to unresolved issues and a lack of follow-up from Chelsea.

Local residents, including Angela Johnstone, a 65-year-old from Cobham, fear the expansion will exacerbate traffic congestion and make housing even less affordable for young people. Sally Judd, who works in the area, echoed these concerns, noting that high property prices are already driving younger generations out of the village.

Despite the pushback, some locals acknowledge the benefits Chelsea brings to the area, such as job creation and increased development. Russell Benzies, a nearby resident, praised the club’s contributions but emphasised the need for balance between growth and community interests.

Chelsea’s ambitions aren’t limited to their training ground. The club recently acquired land adjacent to Stamford Bridge for £80 million, aiming to expand their stadium to a 60,000-seater capacity. However, these plans also face challenges, including logistical complexities and differing visions among the club’s co-owners.

While Chelsea’s expansion efforts highlight the club’s commitment to growth, balancing their ambitions with community concerns will be critical to gaining local support and approval.
