Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson has praised Chelsea midfielder Romeo Lavia, suggesting that the 21-year-old could have been an ideal fit for Manchester City, especially in light of Rodri’s season-ending injury.

Lavia, a product of Manchester City’s academy, left the club in 2022 for Southampton in search of regular playing time. His performances earned him a move to Chelsea in 2023, but injuries have limited him to just 13 appearances so far. Despite this, Lavia’s potential has not gone unnoticed, with Dawson highlighting his qualities during an appearance on Sky Sports (via Metro):

“You look at Lavia there, Liam Delap, would these players have really got an opportunity at Manchester City to go and fulfil their potential? I’m not too sure. It’s easy in hindsight to see what they’ve gone and done. Lavia’s one who would have been perfect for Manchester City and the way they play with Rodri being out.”

Dawson also lauded Lavia’s decision to leave City for more opportunities but acknowledged his struggles with injuries:

“I love what he’s done, went to Southampton, brilliant. He then had numerous hamstring injuries, gone to Chelsea and struggled a bit with injuries. But when we see him, he is a perfect fit for Manchester City. They have seen these players in the building and obviously thought they’re a long way away from our first-team, so they bring someone else in.”

With Chelsea fans eager to see Lavia return to full fitness, Dawson’s comments underscore the midfielder’s untapped potential and the impact he could make when fully fit.
