Former Chelsea left-back Celestine Babayaro has urged Ben Chilwell to consider leaving Stamford Bridge, citing limited opportunities under current manager Enzo Maresca as a significant concern.
“I love him – he’s actually one of my favourite left-backs. But he can’t seem to get himself fit,” Babayaro told Ladbrokes.
“He’s the sort of person who I’m looking at, who probably needs to think about his career. You know, he’s not as young as he once was, so he’s got to be thinking, ‘If I’m not getting games here, I need to move.'”
Chilwell, who joined Chelsea from Leicester City in 2020 for £45 million, initially thrived at the club, winning the Champions League and being appointed vice-captain in 2023.
However, following Maresca’s arrival, the 28-year-old has fallen out of favour and made just one appearance this season, a brief cameo in the Carabao Cup against Barrow.
Most of Maresca’s so-called “bomb squad” have moved on, but Chilwell remains due to his high wages and injury concerns.
Babayaro emphasised, “I just think Chilwell might be looking at his future, and thinking he needs to move on from the club.”
While January interest has been minimal, Everton have been linked with a potential loan move, though the deal might depend on their ability to recall Armando Broja or adjust other plans involving Chelsea players Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Carney Chukwuemeka.
