18 months after signing for Chelsea, Christopher Nkunku finds himself at the centre of intense transfer speculation, with Bayern Munich reportedly interested in securing his services during the January transfer window.
Despite scoring 13 goals across all competitions this season, Nkunku has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter in the Premier League, netting just once in the top flight due to limited minutes. Bayern Munich, eager to bolster their attacking options, have reportedly agreed personal terms with the 27-year-old. However, their initial bid was rejected as Chelsea demand a higher upfront payment. The saga continues as the January window unfolds.
ESPN pundit Julien Laurens has issued a stark warning to Nkunku about the potential pitfalls of joining the Bundesliga giants. Laurens believes a move to Bayern could see Nkunku struggle for game time, similar to his situation at Chelsea.
“Bayern, he’s not going to play ahead of Harry Kane and he’s not a lone striker anyway,” Laurens explained.
“He’s not going to play behind Harry Kane because that’s where Jamal Musiala plays, and right now there’s no way you’d drop him to put Nkunku in.”
Laurens also pointed out that while Nkunku could play wide, he would still face stiff competition. “He can play wide, I guess, but he’s not the same threat as Michael Olise, Kingsley Coman, Serge Gnabry, or Leroy Sané. He would go from being a sub at Chelsea to a sub at Bayern.”
Nkunku’s versatility in the frontline has yet to secure him a starting spot in Enzo Maresca’s best XI. With Nicolas Jackson excelling as the No. 9 and Cole Palmer thriving in the No. 10 role, the French attacker is finding opportunities hard to come by.
Nkunku is reportedly pushing for a move to revive his chances of representing France at the 2026 World Cup. However, Chelsea’s £65m valuation may deter potential suitors.
With Bayern Munich’s interest heating up, the question remains: will Nkunku take the risk of trading Stamford Bridge for the Allianz Arena, or will he heed Laurens’ advice and fight for his place at Chelsea?
