Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson has come under fire for his recent lack of goals, but Premier League legend Alan Shearer has leapt to his defence, praising the young forward’s attitude and overall contribution to the team.

The 23-year-old has scored nine Premier League goals this season but is currently enduring a five-game drought in the league. Jackson’s inconsistency in front of goal was evident during Chelsea’s 2-2 draw against Bournemouth, where he missed several clear chances. Despite his struggles, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca continues to back him as the team’s first-choice striker.

Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day, Shearer explained why he admires Jackson’s mentality:

“I like him. I think he’s improving. I know he misses chances, a lot of chances, actually. He had 14 goals last season. He’s got nine Premier League goals this season. I think he is getting better. There’s lots to admire about his game. I like his attitude. He keeps getting in there despite missing chances. He’s not scared or frightened.”

Shearer highlighted Jackson’s off-the-ball qualities, which benefit his teammates, including Cole Palmer: “He stretches teams and makes it easier for his teammates with his running in behind, which creates the space for Cole Palmer. He has to keep on improving and working on the training ground to improve that. There’s no doubt he’s a threat. There’s lots to his game to admire.”

Acknowledging Jackson’s age and potential, Shearer added: “Eventually he’ll get there. He’s only 23, so there’s still plenty of time to improve. The big thing for me is that I love his attitude; he’s not scared to keep getting in there. You’ve got to keep on doing that.”

While Jackson’s finishing remains a glaring weakness, his overall impact on Chelsea’s gameplay and his relentless work ethic are clear reasons why Maresca is sticking with him. As Shearer suggests, with time and hard work, the young striker has the potential to become a consistent goal threat for the Blues.
