Deportivo La Coruna have turned down Chelsea’s opening €10m (£8.5m) offer for winger Yeremay Hernandez, as the Stamford Bridge club seeks attacking reinforcements this January.
Hernandez, 22, has been a standout performer in a struggling Deportivo side this season, scoring eight goals and providing three assists in 18 games.
Despite Deportivo languishing in 17th place in Spain’s Segunda Division, his performances have attracted attention from top European clubs, including AC Milan.
Chelsea’s initial plan was to secure Hernandez’s signature in January and loan him to Todd Boehly’s Strasbourg for the remainder of the season. However, Deportivo are determined to keep their star player until at least the summer.
Speaking after Deportivo’s 1-1 draw with Malaga, Hernandez addressed his future, saying: “I don’t know, I’m talking to my agent. I don’t know what’s going to happen. If I leave, it will be to take a step forward.”
Deportivo’s general manager, Massimo Benassi, reinforced the club’s stance:
“He and his agents know that the club’s position is clear.”
Hernandez’s current contract runs until 2030 and includes a €20m (£17m) release clause, making any potential transfer a costly proposition for interested clubs.
