Chelsea are in active discussions with the Premier League to settle a case involving secret payments related to transfers made during Roman Abramovich’s tenure as owner, according to The Times.
The club is aiming to reach a financial settlement to avoid potential sporting sanctions, including points deduction.
The irregularities were discovered by Chelsea’s new ownership during the takeover process in May 2022 and were immediately reported to both the Premier League and UEFA. The club is optimistic about securing an agreement similar to the £8.6 million financial settlement it reached with UEFA in July 2023.
The payments under investigation are linked to high-profile transfers, including the signings of Eden Hazard in 2012 and both Willian and Samuel Eto’o in 2013. Discussions between Chelsea and the Premier League are ongoing, with a resolution expected before the end of March.
This case underscores the club’s proactive approach under the new ownership to address legacy issues from the Abramovich era and ensure compliance with financial regulations.
