Why Robert Sanchez’s 35th-minute blunder against Bournemouth highlights Chelsea’s goalkeeper problem

Chelsea’s struggles in the Premier League continued as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.

Despite taking an early lead through a stunning Cole Palmer strike, defensive lapses and a lack of composure saw the Blues let victory slip through their fingers once again.

Moises Caicedo’s conceded penalty and Antoine Semenyo’s strike looked to have sealed a shock comeback for the visitors, but Reece James rescued a point with a brilliant late free-kick.

However, the focus of fans’ frustrations fell on goalkeeper Robert Sanchez—not for conceding the goals, but for his nervy and questionable decision-making with the ball.

A telling moment came in the 35th minute when Chelsea, under no pressure, were dominating possession. Sanchez’s unconvincing handling and distribution drew audible groans from the Stamford Bridge faithful, underlining growing concerns over his suitability as Chelsea’s long-term No. 1.

While manager Enzo Maresca has backed the Spaniard so far, this performance once again highlighted why the club must prioritise signing a reliable goalkeeper in January to stabilise their defensive setup and build from the back with confidence.
