Renato Veiga’s Chelsea future appears to be hanging by a thread, just months after his arrival at Stamford Bridge.

The Portuguese defender, who joined the Blues from Basel last summer, is reportedly keen to secure a move away from the club in search of more playing time in his preferred position.

Veiga’s versatility has seen him predominantly feature at left-back for Chelsea, but the 20-year-old is determined to transition to central defence, a position where he feels he can excel.

However, under manager Enzo Maresca, opportunities in that role have been scarce. The youngster has managed 18 appearances for Chelsea this season but has only started once in the Premier League, leading to his frustration over his current role.

Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided key insights into the situation, stating that Veiga is “pushing” for a move to Borussia Dortmund. The Bundesliga side has shown significant interest in the player, who is eager to make the switch to further his development and secure regular minutes in his desired position.

“Veiga is pushing for a move to Dortmund,” Romano reported, highlighting the defender’s determination to find a club where he can thrive in central defence.

Chelsea, on the other hand, appear willing to sanction his departure. Romano further claimed that the Blues are open to letting Veiga leave this January transfer window, but only if a permanent deal can be secured.

The situation raises questions about Chelsea’s squad management and the challenges young players face in breaking into Maresca’s starting XI. While Veiga’s versatility has been a valuable asset, his push for a central defensive role seems to be a priority he feels the club cannot fulfill.

With Dortmund offering an appealing path forward, it now seems likely that Veiga’s short stint at Stamford Bridge could come to an end. Whether the deal materialises will depend on how negotiations progress in the coming weeks. However, it’s evident that both player and club are prepared for a potential parting of ways.
