Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has shed light on his decision to limit Ben Chilwell’s involvement, emphasising that it comes down to tactical preferences and competition within the squad.
Addressing Chilwell’s professionalism despite the situation, Maresca said:
“We don’t need a player to go out. Simply because they are players who want to play more, there is a chance for them to leave. He has been top. Very professional. He works hard. I feel shame because of the situation but, in terms of behaviour, he has been very good.”
Maresca made it clear that the decision is entirely his and is based on the specific roles other players fulfill:
“First of all, it is my choice. The reason why is because I can see Malo Gusto, Reece James, or Marc Cucurella doing a different kind of job during the game.”
While praising Chilwell’s abilities as a full-back, Maresca highlighted the tactical limitations he perceives in the player:
“I think Chilwell is a top full-back, going up and down the pitch, and he has been given opportunities in the past to win titles and be in the national team, but I struggle to see Ben doing different kinds of things.”
Maresca’s comments reflect his focus on versatility and adaptability in Chelsea’s defensive setup, explaining the challenging situation for the England international.
