Renato Veiga’s journey from Basel to Stamford Bridge has been nothing short of transformative, with the 20-year-old now a full Portugal international.

Since joining Chelsea last summer, Veiga has earned three caps for his country, and manager Enzo Maresca believes the Blues have played a significant role in his success.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s upcoming clash against Bournemouth, Maresca addressed recent reports suggesting Veiga is pushing for a move and his preference to play as a central defender.

While providing clarity on the player’s future, the Chelsea boss highlighted the role the club has played in Veiga’s rise to international prominence.

“At the moment, I am not aware that there is an agreement for Renato,” Maresca said during his pre-match press conference.

“Yesterday he was here working with us and today he will be here. At the moment, he is our player.”

Maresca went on to emphasise the opportunities Chelsea have provided for Veiga to showcase his versatility, which he believes has been instrumental in earning the player a call-up to the Portugal senior national team.

“The only thing I can say is that we bought Renato from Basel, he has played in different positions and has played well,” Maresca explained.

“This has allowed him to be in the senior national team for the first time in his life. Even if he is not playing in his position, it means he can do well in the position he is playing.”

The manager’s comments come amidst speculation about Veiga’s future and his desire to play as a centre-back rather than the left-back role he has frequently occupied at Chelsea.
