Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has addressed the possibility of deploying Cole Palmer on the right wing with an overlapping full-back, explaining how such a setup would ultimately lead Palmer to his preferred position on the pitch.
When asked about the potential switch, Maresca responded:
“Could be. You mentioned that with Cole playing wide, then the full-back would overlap, but when the full-back overlaps, Cole already goes inside the pitch.”
He elaborated on the natural movement of Palmer during games, regardless of his starting position:
“In the end, he ends up in the same position. It’s just the starting position, then the ball moves, and Cole changes position.”
Recalling an example, Maresca highlighted Palmer’s role in the season opener against Manchester City:
“I think he played on the right in the first game of the season against City, but with Malo Gusto overlapping, Cole would finish in the same position, in the pocket. But I prefer to see Cole inside.”
Maresca’s comments underline his tactical preference for Palmer to operate in central areas, where the young midfielder can have the greatest impact.
