Revealed: Why Graham Potter chose West Ham and lessons learned from Chelsea’s dismissal

Graham Potter is set to make his managerial return with West Ham United, nearly two years after his turbulent seven-month stint at Chelsea.

The former Brighton boss has taken time to reflect on his experience at Stamford Bridge, where he faced significant challenges, including interference from outside the football department and a lack of control over transfer decisions.

At Chelsea, Potter struggled to replicate the success he enjoyed at Brighton, where he was known for his progressive tactics, player development, and long-term vision. His time in West London was marred by a chaotic January 2023 transfer window, during which Chelsea spent £300 million against his advice, as well as an injury-plagued squad and inconsistent support from ownership.

Now at West Ham, Potter faces a club with high ambitions but an often impatient approach. Success will depend on whether he can bring the resilience, clarity, and adaptability he cultivated after his Chelsea experience to a team that demands immediate progress.

While the fit may not appear seamless, Potter’s focus on incremental improvement and tactical acumen could offer West Ham the steady leadership they need. For Potter, this role represents a chance to rebuild his reputation and regain the control he lacked at Chelsea.

Addressing the press after his recent appointment at West Ham, Potter said he believes that he has become a better person.

He said: “I think I’m a better person now for the experience (at Chelsea), a better coach for the experience and well rested.”
