Chelsea are set to provide insight into their defensive plans as Argentine defender Aaron Anselmino joins the first team after being recalled from his loan at Boca Juniors.

The club confirmed his return on January 3, with football.london reporting that he will be integrated into the first-team setup at Cobham.

Sources close to the club revealed: “Because of his age and moving to a brand new country, there will be little pressure applied to Anselmino to hit the ground running this season.”

However, with injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile leaving Chelsea short on centre-backs, the Argentine could see action sooner than expected.

Chelsea face Morecambe in the FA Cup third round on Saturday, a match head coach Enzo Maresca could use to rotate his squad. While Anselmino may not start, a place in the squad could indicate the club’s plans for him.

There is also curiosity around Josh Acheampong, with Maresca potentially reconsidering his involvement after his recent appearance against Crystal Palace. Saturday’s match could offer key insights into Chelsea’s strategy for both young defenders.
