Chelsea are exploring defensive reinforcements during the January transfer window, with Fabrizio Romano revealing that the Blues are considering a move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi instead of recalling Trevoh Chalobah.
The club’s need for depth was evident when manager Enzo Maresca handed 18-year-old Josh Acheampong his first start in the 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace. While Acheampong impressed, Chelsea appear keen to strengthen their defence further.
Romano provided insight into Chelsea’s plans: “Chelsea are seriously considering bringing in one more centre back this month. Understand Marc Guehi has been discussed as an option internally, not easy… but he has 18 months left on his contract.”
Guehi, a former Chelsea player who has since become a key figure for Crystal Palace and a regular for England, is seen as a valuable option. Romano added: “Chelsea also have a recall clause for Trevoh Chalobah, as point of contact.”
While recalling Chalobah from his successful loan spell at Selhurst Park remains a fallback option, Guehi’s potential return would add proven quality and familiarity to the Blues’ defence.
Thanks for coming back
