Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has reportedly urged the club’s hierarchy to prioritise signing a new midfielder in the January transfer window, according to Simon Phillips.

The Italian tactician is increasingly concerned about the heavy workload placed on key players Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, who have featured extensively without adequate rotation options.

The situation is exacerbated by the ongoing injury issues plaguing Romeo Lavia, who has been trusted by Maresca but has struggled with fitness throughout the season. With limited depth in midfield, Chelsea may need to act decisively to avoid burnout or further injuries to their primary options.

There is speculation that Chelsea could recall either Lesley Ugochukwu or Andrey Santos from their respective loan spells to strengthen the squad. Both players are highly regarded prospects but were sent out on loan for development.

Simultaneously, the futures of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Cesare Casadei appear uncertain. The trio have not featured prominently in Maresca’s plans and are reportedly available for either loan or permanent moves in January.
