Chelsea legend and former manager Frank Lampard has lauded Marc Guehi, highlighting the young defender’s remarkable progress since leaving Stamford Bridge.
Lampard, who handed Guehi his Chelsea debut during his first spell as manager, remains an avid supporter of the centre-back and was particularly impressed watching him during Euro 2024.
He said: “I gave him his debut at Chelsea, a really polite, humble lad. You could see that he had all the attributes that could take him a long way. Particularly, as I say, the personality. He wanted to do well.”
Lampard emphasised the qualities that made Guehi stand out: “I really liked the idea of working with him at that time because when a young kid comes through and shows that humility and wants to do well, that’s an amazing thing to work with as a coach.”
Reflecting on Guehi’s ascent to the international stage, Lampard added: “But to go away and play as he’s played at Palace, to come into an England squad with high pressure and everyone was going, ‘Oh, we’re not sure…’ He’s now one position we’re not talking about which is an amazing achievement from him.”
Guehi, who left Chelsea during Lampard’s tenure, has established himself as a key player for Crystal Palace and a regular in the England squad. His performances have caught the eye of current Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who reportedly sees Guehi as fitting the profile of the centre-back needed in his system.
