Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has pinpointed a critical vulnerability in Chelsea’s tactical setup under Enzo Maresca, focusing on their susceptibility to transitions. Ahead of today’s Premier League clash, Glasner highlighted how Chelsea’s aggressive attacking play often leaves them exposed defensively.
Speaking about this key weakness, Glasner explained:
“But also when you have six players, sometimes seven players in attack, this gives you also chances for transition, and this is how they lost the game at Ipswich, with two transitions.”
Chelsea’s defeat to Ipswich was a prime example of this issue, where their inability to recover quickly after losing possession proved costly. Glasner also referred to similar struggles in another recent match:
“They conceded the goals against Fulham with transitions, but on the other side they’re always dangerous to score goals, they always create chances in any single game, so this will be the challenge: to control their attacking players, their quality and, on the other side, to use the space, to take the mistakes they make and score goals from it.”
The Palace manager’s comments underline the balancing act Chelsea must navigate under Maresca’s system. While the Blues have an impressive attacking structure capable of creating numerous chances, their commitment to pushing players forward can leave them vulnerable at the back.
Chelsea fans will be eager to see how Maresca adjusts to address these transition issues, especially as the Blues aim to solidify their place in the league standings. The clash against Palace will test whether Chelsea can turn their offensive strengths into a decisive advantage without compromising defensive stability.
