Former Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips has called on the Blues to prioritise signing an experienced defender in the upcoming January transfer window, citing the lack of a suitable replacement for former stalwart Thiago Silva.
Speaking to sportscasting.com, Wright-Phillips highlighted Chelsea’s defensive gaps since Silva’s departure:
“They let Thiago Silva go, but they didn’t replace him. I think they need more experience in the defence.”
With Chelsea struggling for consistency this season, Wright-Phillips believes an experienced addition to the backline could provide the stability needed to improve their fortunes under Enzo Maresca.
