A dramatic stoppage-time goal saw Fulham complete a remarkable comeback to defeat Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League (PL), ending the Blues’ impressive 12-game unbeaten streak across all competitions.
Chelsea entered the match looking to bounce back from a disappointing 0-0 draw against Everton last weekend, which halted their eight-game winning run.
Sitting second in the league, the Blues had a chance to close the gap on Liverpool at the top temporarily. However, Fulham, enjoying their best-ever PL start with 25 points from 17 games, arrived with confidence and posed a stern challenge.
The visitors registered the first shot on target through Raúl Jiménez, but Chelsea’s Robert Sánchez handled it comfortably. Moments later, Cole Palmer, who has been a standout player this season, delivered another moment of brilliance. Picking up the ball 40 yards out, Palmer weaved through defenders and found the bottom corner from the edge of the box. It was his 12th league goal of the season and his 26th in 2024 – the highest tally by a Chelsea player in a calendar year since Bobby Tambling’s 27 in 1966.
Despite falling behind, Fulham responded well. Calvin Bassey tested Sánchez with a sharp effort, while at the other end, Bernd Leno produced a stunning reaction save to deny Marc Cucurella just before halftime.
Chelsea began the second half strongly, with Leno tipping Enzo Fernández’s effort wide before Levi Colwill’s would-be goal was disallowed for offside.
Fulham, however, grew into the game, with Alex Iwobi and Antonee Robinson causing problems for the Chelsea defence. Their persistence paid off late in the match when Robinson’s cross was headed goalwards by Rodrigo Muniz, allowing Harry Wilson to nod the ball into the net for the equaliser.
As the clock ticked towards full-time, Fulham struck again in devastating fashion. A swift counter-attack ended with Muniz finishing clinically, sealing Fulham’s first victory at Stamford Bridge since 1979.
The defeat is a major blow to Chelsea’s title aspirations, with manager Enzo Maresca admitting that his side may not yet be ready for a sustained challenge at the top. Meanwhile, Fulham’s impressive run under Marco Silva continues, with the Cottagers now boasting just one loss in their last 10 league matches.
